Student Corner from September 2008

If you want happiness for an hour — take a nap. If you want happiness for a day — go fishing. If you want happiness for a month — get married. If you want happiness for a year — inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime — help someone else."

— Chinese proverb

These are the guiding principles, on which Bombay Chartered Accountants’ Society has year over year successfully and effectively contributed to the ever-changing needs of the Chartered Accountants’ fraternity.

BCAS has always kept itself abreast with the changing times and has made continued efforts to adapt with the ever-demanding C.A. Students’ community. A step in this direction is the creation of the "BCAS — Students’ Forum". Students’ Forum is a breakthrough for the students, for it is "Of the students, For the students and By the students". In the past, BCAS has carried out a number of student-related activities. However, these activities involved a greater participation of the members. The students’ role in these activities was at the most restricted to a few activities. Now with the establishment of the Students’ Forum, students have been encouraged to take active role in deciding, organising, co-ordinat-ing and conducting of the events under the able guidance of the Human Resource Development Committee.

What the Students’ Forum proposes to achieve ?

Being a pro-students forum, the Forum aims at achieving the following :

  • Conducting study circle meetings of students.

  • Publishing Students’ Newsletter, comprising articles and other topics of interest contributed by students.

  • Conduct programmes on academic topics for the CPT, PCC and Final students.

  • Conduct programmes on non-academic topics like Banking, Internal Audit, Capital Markets, to name a few.

  • Organise mock examinations.

  • And a host of exciting programmes as per the wishes and needs of Forum members.

Each student who is pursuing the course of CA is invited to join the BCAS Students’ Forum. Simply register at BCAS office by filling up your registration form and a one-time entrance fee of Rs.50. You will have the privilege of first-hand and early information about CA students-related programmes and developments. You could also avail Library facilities and subscription of BCAJ at a concession.

Students having any queries/doubts or desirous of joining our existing group of representative students who shall be active in organising events, may write to us on students.bcas@gmail.com.

Students’ Forum so far :

It’s heartening to observe that the Students’ Forum presently enjoys the patronage of around 438 members and the number is swelling by every passing day.

Self-development has always been the ‘crux’ of our activities. We collectively as Forum are strongly determined than ever before to lift our intellectual levels to higher knowledge scales.

The Forum already enjoys the able shoulders of 20 forthcoming student members who have volunteered to take the lead in giving shape to the dreams and ambitions of the Forum. These students have formed a Students’ Forum committee which would act as a single-point coordination team between the students and the seniors helping the students realise their goals. The committee has been further split in four specialist teams, each having a role to play to perfection in order to make this endeavour successful. They are as under :

1. The Students’ Relations Team

2. The E-Newsletter Team

3. The Event Management Team

4. The Study Circle Team

Programmes of the Students’ Forum :

The course of chartered accountancy is definitely a tough nut to crack, but a piece of advice or some valuable guidance makes a world of difference. True to its promise, the Students’ Forum is here to act as a bridge to link you all to some of the best-known learned professionals who are ever willing to act as your guide and mentor. So ‘Buddies’, make the most of the programme which is coming your way this month.

As the Forum is truly of the students, the study circle has been specifically designed, so as to give the students a greater exposure to the professional challenges that lie ahead of them.

The study circle meet will be chaired by a Chartered Accountant. The learned chairman will not be a presenter at the meeting. He/She will be the torch-bearer and guide who will steer the meet to correct and logical conclusions.

Then the question arises, "Who will present the topic at the meeting ?" Well, don’t be shocked…. It will be actually one or more students presenting a detailed paper on the topic. The presentation will be followed by a Question and Answer Session. The intention being that the students at the end of the meet become well accomplished with the topic.

The seats are limited and not more than 75 students would be accommodated on first-come-first-served basis. Only Forum members can attend the study circle meet. Hence make sure that all of you interested students out there have registered with the Students’ Forum in time to not to miss out on this knowledge bank.

All the Forum members should intimate about their willingness to attend the study circle through email to students.bcas@gmail.com at the earliest.

Lastly, friends, we at BCAS believe in the saying

"Give the best to the world

And the best will come back to you".

We would like to urge all you aspiring chartered accountants to believe in the same and spread the message of our activities for the students.
